Ruffi-Ann found at the wrong place, Wrong time

Donovan Joseph— partner of dancehall entertainer Ruffian — said he has made contact with the singjay, who is still listed as missing on the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s website since Saturday, September 3.

According to Joseph, Ruffian (given name is Sharon Peterkin) is currently being held at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.

She had contacted me to say that she is not missing, but is being held at the detention centre. She gave me her detention number and didn’t say much except that she is not being charged with an offence, and was held with others in a vehicle. It’s a matter of her being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

Joseph said since her detention, the singjay has already made two court appearances and will be returning to court next month. He did not say how she came to be in the United States, but said a family member reported her missing to local authorities when he came home in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, and was unable to locate her.

Ruffian emerged on the reggae/dancehall scene in the 1990s. She has released songs, including the Steelie & Cleevie-produced Stick To Yuh Man as well as the 2009 social commentary Save the Juvenile.

She subsequently released a 16-track debut album entitled Save the Juvenile, which was a collaborative effort with reggae journeyman Max Romeo.

Angels Watching Over Me And With God’s Will And My Determination I Will Walk Again

Twelve years after his life-threatening experience, Real VI revisits the incident in the song Angels Watching Over Me.

EVEN though shots from gunmen 12 years ago left him paralysed and confined to a wheelchair, singer Real VI says his musical dreams are far from shattered.

“In this single, I just sum up the entire ordeal in three minutes. It’s about getting a setback in life, but rising above it despite the obstacles. I really hope that my story will be an inspiration to others,” he said.

Reflecting on the 2004 shooting, Real VI said he started the morning like any other.
“I got up and was sweeping my yard and went next door to borrow my neighbour’s rake. After entering, I realised that there were gunmen hiding out on his premises, and I guess they were startled as I was, so they fired at me,” he recalled.

The 39-year-old artiste, whose given name is Cosmo Watson, said the bullets pierced his neck and spinal chord.

“There were days when I would just lay there and think about what my destiny would be. I sometimes wonder if I would make it out alive or not and what have I done to deserve such an ordeal. But God was still in the vessel and He has major plans for me. I am still doing therapy, and with God’s will and my determination I will walk again,” he said.

Angels Watching Over Me is produced by Earthsource Records out of New York. The label also produced

Successful, another of Real VI’s new songs.

Growing up in Seaview Gardens in Kingston, Real VI attended Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School. At age 14, he recorded

Evil Path, his debut single, for Sugar Minott’s Youthman Promotions. This was followed by other singles such as

Ain’t No Stopping Us,

Rich Mi Sey, Baby Girl, and Question.

New Single And Slang, Titled Ugly Up Di Counter Creating A buzz

Up-and-coming dancehall artiste Fyah Torche is promoting his new single and slang, titled 'Ugly Up Di Counter', featuring Big Star.

The single was produced by DJ Speng of Calico Mix Production and has been getting favourable feedback in the dancehall circle. The artiste explained how he came up with the slang.
"It was my birthday and I was at my friend's bar in Golden Heights. We were drinking liquor of all kinds and the slang just came up 'ugly up di counter'.

From there, it was like it became viral and everybody began to say it, so the next step was that we made it into a song and took it to the dancehall, and it is catching on with everybody real fast," said Fyah Torche.

Fyah Torche also said the slang is gaining momentum in New York since the label which produced the accompanying record has been executing it's own promotions.
"I have been doing street promotions and the next step is to go to commercial radio, yu nuh. One step at a time," he said.
